Project: earthquake resistant houses

Thousands of families were killed or left homeless in an inaccessible mountainous region because their houses collapsed. The project supports the reconstruction with building material and the training of local carpenters and masons. The objective is to integrate an earthquake resistant construction design into the local tradition of building houses.

To achieve this, internationally experienced architects and civil engineers work together with local colleagues. The developed construction concepts are tested together with local craftsmen, improved and implemented in large numbers by supplying material, tools and training.

The construction concept will be made available to government institutions and other aid agencies and their staff will be trained. Thus the improved concept is spread far beyond the original project area.
